Paula Sparks is the Chairperson, and a founding member, of A-law. She is a Barrister specialising in clinical negligence and personal injury litigation, and is a regular lecturer on human rights related aspects of medical law and inquests.

Antoine Goetschel

Antoine Goetschel is an Animal Welfare Lawyer based in Switzerland, and works as a consultant on animal welfare law around the world. He has written many books on the subject, including ‘The Animal in the Law – 99 Aspects of Hu­man-Animal Relationship’.

Professor Joan Schaffner

Professor Joan Schaffner is an Associate Professor of Law at the George Washington University Law School. She is the author of ‘Introduction to Animals and the Law’ and is a volunteer and foster for the Washington Humane Society.

Dr Darren Calley

Dr Darren Calley studied, and is now a lecturer at, the University of Essex. He has a keen interest in animal welfare law, which he teaches as part of the Environmental Law and Public International Law undergraduate modules.

David Thomas

David Thomas

David Thomas has for many years been legal consultant to several animal protection and human rights NGOs and has acted in numerous test cases both in the UK and Europe. He is a consultant to Bindmans LLP and a former chair of the RSPCA.

Gwendolen Morgan

Gwendolen Morgan

Gwendolen Morgan studied at Trinity College Dublin, completed her LPC at City Law School, and currently works at Bindmans LLP in the Public Law and Human Rights department, where a substantial part of her practice deals with animal rights.

Advocates for Animals is the UK’s first law firm dedicated to animal protection law. It was founded in 2019 by Edie Bowles and David Thomas, who are both Solicitors at the firm. Solicitor, Alice Collinson later joined the team.
