FARM Regulation, Scrutiny & Transparency

Regulation, Scrutiny & Transparency

The implementation and effective enforcement of animal welfare law is a common concern within the animal protection community. Navigating the current regulatory regime that governs farmed animal health and welfare oversight in the UK can be complex and confusing.

This can make it difficult to understand the extent of compliance with farmed animal welfare laws in the UK, and the efficacy of so-called Official Controls undertaken by designated authorities. This is made even more complex by the fact that animal welfare is a devolved matter, and each UK nation has different arrangements.

Our view is strongly that the implementation of law is as important as its substance, and we are accordingly working to assess Official Controls delivery throughout the UK in order to identify what reform may be required, particularly post-Brexit.

The results of this piece of work are expected in early 2022.
